This was a great session at LJMU with the novelist Kate Long who shared tips and techniques. Her approach to developing characters was really useful. It involves a sort of questionnaire to complete that leads to thinking about incidents that had happened to them – ideas about the background of characters – lots of material to show what they are like – rather than tell – this was a very useful exercise. I also liked the way Kate worked through her drafts thinking about themes and threads and marking them to follow in the manuscript. This is really useful for checking the flow of particular plot lines, development and of characters and themes and so on.
